New Directions
For women entering the labor market for the very first time or who face several challenges to maintaining satisfying long-term employment, New Directions is an intensive four-week class designed to help participants overcome barriers and succeed in today’s competitive workplace.

Week one begins the career assessment process. Participants complete a battery of four career assessments to assist them in determining their individual job-related interests, skills, personality types, and values while developing a concrete definition of individual career success.

Week two provides instruction on how to find information about the labor market. Participants learn how to research and locate occupational opportunities that fit their unique career interests by using library and internet resources, talking to people in their chosen career field, and experiential opportunities.

Week three empowers participants to identify and explore interpersonal and environmental resources for success. Facilitators teach techniques that build stress and time management skills, self esteem, computer capabilities, health and wellness levels, and reduce barriers. A panel discussion on lifelong learning provides links to Central Ohio educational and training facilities as well as realistic financing resources.

Week four introduces self-marketing techniques and skills. Participants learn how to effectively apply for jobs and write a resume. They learn effective self-presentation, interviewing, and salary negotiation skills. Effective decision-making and goal-setting skills assist participants in staying focused and motivated on their career journey. Finally, every participant who graduates from the New Directions program leaves with a concrete plan for progress to help them stay on track.
