In 2005, more than 300 volunteers donated over 3,000 hours in support of
New Directions Career Center. From the class room to the board
room, at our events and in the community, volunteers
enabled the Center to meet the career development needs
of thousands of women. We hope that you will consider
joining the diverse community of NDCC volunteers who make
a significant impact on all the women who are empowered
through the services at New Directions Career Center.
The following volunteer opportunities are available:
Topics are scheduled into a four-week syllabus. The class meets
Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Volunteers
are contacted four to six weeks in advance. Topics range
from 1 to 3 hours in length.

Are you fashion savvy? Do you have an eye for what works
and what does not work when it comes to professional
women's clothing? Do you want to give back to your
community but have a limited schedule? Are you someone
with experience working in retail and have some time to
donate? If you answered yes to any of the above
questions, then volunteer at the New Directions Clothing
Closet might be the right opportunity for you!
The New Directions Clothing Closet helps women develop a
work or interview wardrobe on with affordable clothing.
Gently used or new women's professional wear is donated
to the Closet. The Closet is open to the public.
Graduates of New Directions and clients referred by area
social service agencies receive free outfits. Over 3,000
women received free clothing last year alone!

Volunteer opportunities are available
Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Shift options include
the following: 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. to
4:00 p.m. Volunteers select 2 days (same day) out of the
month to volunteer (non-consecutive days preferred).
Duties include: Advise clients on appropriate
business attire. Be able to sort, size and arrange
women's business apparel. Share tips and strategies for
creating and maintaining a business wardrobe.
Requirements include: Knowledge of business and business
casual wardrobe development; ability to advise
individuals; sensitive to our clients and their life
situations; must be non-judgmental.
New Directions Clothing Closet is open Wednesdays,
Fridays and Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Location
is 199 E. Rich St., Columbus, Ohio, 43215. Located in Downtown Columbus,

This volunteer opportunity is for those who are interested in
sharing their experience in a particular career field
with a graduate of New Directions Career Center. Program
staff members will match you with a graduate based on
their career interests and your career experiences.
Calls can be made on a one time basis with the
individual.

Committees:
- New Directions Clothing Closet
- Assess operational matters to ensure consistency with
agency policies and strategic plan for marketing,
fundraising, and target client outreach.
- Board Development
- Assess board composition and membership needs
including identifying and recruiting new members, making
committee assignments, and cultivating current members
consistent with agency polices and strategic plan.
- Bostwick Scholarship
- Oversee all facts of the annual scholarship program
including application submission and review, recipient
selection and event promotion consistent with agency
polices and strategic plan.
- Executive
- Review operational, programmatic & financial
matters and take action on behalf of the board, in
between regularly scheduled meetings, in a manner that
is consistent with agency policies and strategic plan.
- Finance
- Monitor agency fiscal matters and procedures to ensure
the fiscal diversification and health of the agency in a
manner that is consistent with agency policies and
strategic plan. Communicate the status of the agency’s
financial situation to the rest of the Board.
- Market Development
- Assess and maintain overall fundraising, public
relations, community awareness and marketing plans to
ensure appropriate service delivery, client recruitment
and resource development, in a manner that is consistent
with agency policies and strategic plan. Strategize
niche and coordinate market branding for the Center and
its programs including Best Foot Forward. Analyze
competition and opportunities for collaboration.
- Personnel- Review human resources’ issues & procedures
relevant to agency operations and facilitate Executive
Director evaluation/review process consistent with
agency policies and strategic plan.
- Program
- Assess and ensure that agency programs and services are
consistent with the agency policies and strategic plan.
Develop and implement target client recruitment plan to
maintain appropriate balance of fee generating and fee
waived services. Assist in overall agency efforts to increase economic self-sufficiency and
competitiveness. Assess, enhance and oversee volunteer
management program.
- Step Into Our Closet
- Coordinate all aspects of fashion show fundraiser
consistent with agency policies and strategic plan.
- Strategic Planning
- Create and oversee implementation of
strategic/operational plan in a manner that is
consistent with the agency policies.
- Technology
- Ensure that agency fully utilizes available technology in a
manner that is consistent with agency policies and
strategic plan.
- Women of Promise
- Coordinate all aspects of silent/live auction
fundraiser & graduate recognition
consistent with agency policies and strategic plan.

Duties include: Light office work, including typing, mailings,
data entry, filing, photocopying. Required skills
include Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Microsoft
Access, preferred but not required. Strong typing skills
preferred. Works well with people. Volunteers currently
needed for copying and assembling materials; bulk
mailings; Access database entry; and word processing.

Duties include: Assistance in promoting the
services of New Directions Career Center to the community.
Will work with Volunteer Coordinator and Director of
Programs and Services in agency outreach efforts.
Volunteer will canvas flyers in approx. 10-15 selected
community spaces where local information resources are
provided on a regular basis (i.e. coffee shops, grocery
stores, gyms, libraries, places of worship, women's
groups, and boutiques.) Flyering will be done twice a
year.
Requirements include: Competencies in oral
communication; experience or interest in learning about
community outreach and not for profit marketing efforts.
Local travel required.
